The syncretism between Catholicism and the Yoruba religion in Cuba, dates back to the colonial era, when African slaves were brought to the island and forced to adopt Christianity. To preserve their beliefs, the slaves concealed their orishas behind Catholic saints.The Holy Child of Atocha, syncretized by Elegguá, is an orisha venerated by his followers as the master who opens and closes the paths of life, embodying the mystery of roads and destiny. In this series, the artist explores his deep Afro-Cuban roots by blending them with the freedom, fluidity, and lightness offered by Chinese ink. The collection features a series of keys, anchors, and portals, symbolizing the passages between worlds. The imperfect circles challenge the harmonious perfection of the Japanese enso, introducing intentional chaos that marks the spirit of these work. This unique fusion captures the rhythm and dynamism of Yoruba movement, creating a visual symphony of energy and symbolism.
